Ava is a co-managing partner and practices primarily in the area of expropriation law. She still maintains a commercial litigation practice for select clients and she has a significant background in insurance law. She is responsible for the firm’s expropriation practice and is the past president of the Ontario Expropriations Association, an industry association that brings together lawyers, appraisers, and business loss consultants from around the province who practice in the field.
Ava is a well-known and well-respected lawyer both by her clients and her peers. She has appeared before all levels of courts and tribunals on behalf of her clients for over three decades. Now that more files are settled than are litigated, she has successfully negotiated settlements for her clients ranging from minor matters to files worth tens of millions of dollars.
Ava was called to the Ontario Bar in June 1986 having practiced for a number of years prior to this in Quebec. When requalifying in Ontario, she became the first person ever permitted to obtain a Common Law degree from Osgoode Hall in only one year because of her Civil Law background. After her call, she taught civil litigation at the Law Society for nine years.
Ava is frequently invited to speak at legal conferences across the country on a broad variety of topics. She has also been asked to organize and chair many legal conferences and her leadership skills and experience have allowed her to successfully do this on topics ranging from expropriation to insurance matters.
